We think highly of the real-life, honest-to-goodness stock certificates you hold in your hands. We really do hate to see them go. But that’s where we’re headed: the cusp of change, the beginning of the end.
The media’s been anticipating their demise for years, and we’ve followed along.
The New York Times did an article way back in 1990 predicting paper certificates’ days were numbered. By 1997, around the time OneShare was ramping up, Business Times wrote that the only thing keeping certificates around was the industry waiting for electronic processing systems to play catch-up. In 2000, the St. Petersburg Times discussed the challenges associated with paper records, while in 2001, Bankrate.com lamented the loss of these historical documents. In 2007, Community Banker observed that the paperless future is almost here.
It’s a countdown, sure. But it’s also an opportunity. The certificates you get from OneShare will be the last of their kind.
